Baghdad: The US Embassy in Baghdad has issued a statement urging American citizens in Iraq to assess their personal security situations and consider leaving the country if they can do so safely. The embassy emphasized that for many, departing Iraq as soon as possible may be the best course of action.

According to Anadolu Agency, the embassy advised those who choose to remain in Iraq to stay vigilant, maintain a low profile, and be prepared to shelter in secure locations for extended periods. The advisory highlighted that Iran and groups aligned with Iran continue to pose significant threats to public safety in the region.

The embassy has also cautioned US citizens to exercise extreme caution and avoid areas where they might become targets. The statement noted that, despite the closed airspace and suspension of commercial flights from Iraq, overland routes to neighboring countries such as Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Trkiye remain available. However, travelers should anticipate potential closures and long delays at most land border crossings.

The advisory comes amid a backdrop of escalating regional tensions following a joint attack by Israel and the US on Iran, which began on February 28. Iranian authorities report that the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 1,200 deaths and injured more than 10,000 individuals. In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
