Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to host his German counterpart Johann Wadephul in the capital, Ankara, Turkish diplomatic sources said Wednesday. Wadephul will travel to Trkiye on Thursday, where he will meet with Fidan.

According to Anadolu Agency, during the meeting, Fidan is expected to express his satisfaction with the momentum gained in Turkish-German relations through high-level visits. He is also hopeful that the upcoming third meeting of the Trkiye-Germany Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, set for May 18 in Berlin, will further enhance the countries’ multidimensional relations.

Fidan plans to articulate Trkiye’s expectation that the EU will approach Trkiye-EU relations from a strategic perspective and hopes that Germany will aid in advancing Trkiye’s EU accession negotiations. Additionally, he intends to address key EU-related issues, such as updating the Customs Union and progressing the visa liberalization dialogue.

On regional matters, Fidan is likely to emphasize Ankara’s concerns about recent attacks that threaten energy supply security and pose risks to counterterrorism and migration efforts. He is expected to advocate for diplomatic solutions to reduce tensions and will discuss Trkiye’s positions on pressing regional and global issues, including the situation in Gaza, the Russia-Ukraine war, and developments in Syria.

This high-level exchange follows recent visits between Turkish and German leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Germany in November 2023 and visits by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Trkiye earlier. The bilateral trade volume between Trkiye and Germany reached $52.2 billion last year and is projected to hit $60 billion annually in the near future.
