Bangkok: Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that negotiations with Iran are pivotal for maintaining safe oil transport routes through the Strait of Hormuz, thereby mitigating the risk of a significant supply disruption.

According to Anadolu Agency, Anutin emphasized to reporters in Bangkok that successful diplomatic conversations with Iran aim to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains navigable, reducing potential interruptions in oil supply. This strategic waterway is crucial, particularly as the ongoing Middle East conflict shows no signs of abating. The Prime Minister highlighted that the protracted conflict has resulted in persistent volatility in oil prices, which could surge if tensions continue and the strait remains obstructed.

The Prime Minister’s statements follow an incident where a Thai ship successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz after what were termed “successful” negotiations with both Iran and Oman. The importance of these talks is underscored by Thailand’s heavy reliance on Gulf nations for energy supplies, with approximately 56% of its energy, valued at around $43 billion in 2024, being sourced from the region.

However, the situation remains tense, as evidenced by an earlier attack this month on a Thai vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in the ship running aground and three crew members going missing. In response, Bangkok has sought Iran’s assistance in locating the missing sailors.

The strategic Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital corridor for energy supplies to several Asian countries. Despite diplomatic efforts, it remains effectively blockaded by Iran, currently in conflict with the US and Israel since late February, raising concerns over future supply stability.
