Damascus: Syria on Sunday condemned a ‘terrorist attack’ targeting the residence of Nechirvan Barzani, the president of Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG). The Foreign Ministry stated that the attack was carried out by ‘outlaw groups’ and described it as a threat to security and stability in Iraq and the wider region. The ministry emphasized that the attack violated international law and reiterated Syria’s support for Iraq’s stability and territorial integrity. It also rejected all forms of armed interference in Iraq’s internal affairs.

According to Anadolu Agency, Barzani’s residence in Duhok was targeted Saturday in a drone attack. There were no casualties reported, although there was limited property damage near interception sites. The attack occurred amidst escalating hostilities in the region following a joint offensive by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28. The offensive has resulted in over 1,340 fatalities, including the then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has responded with waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. These retaliatory actions have caused casualties, infrastructure damage, and have disrupted global markets and aviation.
