Russia Blocks Bahrain’s Hormuz Resolution, Proposes Alternative with China

Russia: Russia vetoed a Bahraini-led UN Security Council draft resolution Tuesday on the Strait of Hormuz, saying it grants "carte blanche for the continued aggressive acts and ongoing further escalation" against Iran, while announcing an alternative resolution co-authored with China.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia cast his country's vote against the draft resolution tabled by Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia. Nebenzia declared that Moscow's partners had gone "much further" than acceptable, critiquing the resolution as a fundamentally erroneous and dangerous approach to regional matters.

Nebenzia highlighted that the proposed draft was filled with unbalanced, inaccurate, and confrontational elements, presenting Iran's actions as the sole source of destabilizing activities and regional tensions. He argued that it failed to acknowledge the US and Israel's illegal attacks on Iranian soil.

The ambassador also pointed out the geographical oversight in the draft, noting the omission that a significant part of the Strait of Hormuz lies within Iran's territorial waters. He warned that the draft could set a dangerous precedent for international law, the International Law of the Sea, and the authority of the Security Council.

Reaffirming Russia's stance, Nebenzia condemned the United States and Israel's aggression against Iran and rejected strikes targeting Iranian civilians and infrastructure. With the veto, he announced that Russia and China were preparing an alternative resolution that would align with international law and the UN Charter, emphasizing peaceful dispute resolution. The new draft will be submitted for a vote shortly.
