Cairo: Egypt condemned Israel’s latest strikes on Lebanon, accusing it of trying to sabotage efforts to restore calm in the region following a US-Iran ceasefire announcement.

According to Anadolu Agency, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement denouncing the Israeli attacks that targeted wide areas across Lebanon, resulting in hundreds of civilian casualties. The ministry highlighted that the strikes deliberately targeted civilian facilities and infrastructure, describing them as a blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and a breach of international humanitarian law.

The strikes, which occurred shortly after the US-Iran ceasefire agreement, were said to contradict the positive atmosphere that the agreement had fostered. Egypt accused Israel of seeking to undermine ongoing regional and international efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting dialogue and diplomacy. The ministry warned that such actions risk dragging the region into further chaos.

Cairo urged immediate intervention by regional and international actors to halt what it termed as Israel’s ‘reckless and dangerous escalation.’ The ministry emphasized the need to prevent the region from descending into further violence and instability.

The statement also reiterated Egypt’s full support for Lebanon, stressing the importance of respecting the country’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. The Israeli military launched a series of deadly strikes across Lebanon, reportedly killing at least 254 people and injuring 1,165 others, according to the Lebanese Civil Defense.

Israel has been conducting airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon since a cross-border attack by the Hezbollah group on March 2, despite a ceasefire that took effect in November 2024.
