Washington: NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte responded to US criticism on Thursday, asserting that the alliance is “not a one-way street.” This statement was made following allegations that NATO allies did not fully support the US-Israeli war against Iran.

According to Anadolu Agency, Rutte addressed the issue during his speech at the Reagan Institute in Washington, emphasizing that the alliance’s mutual effort was evident when US, European, and Canadian troops fought together in Afghanistan. His comments come amid rising tensions after President Donald Trump and senior administration officials criticized NATO countries for their reluctance to participate in securing the Strait of Hormuz or restrict access to bases during the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. Trump has even threatened to withdraw from the alliance over these issues.

Rutte highlighted that most allies are now providing substantial support, despite initial hesitations. He noted that allies have been responding to President Trump’s requests by offering logistics and basing assistance to support US operations. Rutte explained that the element of surprise was a factor, as Trump chose not to inform allies ahead of the initial strikes to maintain strategic advantage.

Rutte also emphasized that European allies are making significant contributions in logistics and other measures to ensure the success of US military operations aimed at preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. He reiterated the importance of a strong Europe and NATO and affirmed that they will not take US leadership for granted.

The remarks followed a meeting between Rutte and Trump at the White House, which Rutte described as “frank” and “candid.” He assured Trump that the majority of European countries have acted in accordance with US requests and previously agreed-upon terms, acknowledging that some delays were inevitable.
