London: The UK has detected and monitored increased Russian naval activity in the Atlantic, north of the UK, Defense Secretary John Healey said on Thursday. Speaking from Downing Street, Healey detailed that three submarines had carried out a ‘covert’ operation in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, the UK responded by deploying a warship and aircraft, ensuring that the Russian vessels were ‘monitored 24/7’ during a month-long mission. Healey emphasized that there was ‘no evidence’ of any damage to UK infrastructure in the Atlantic as a result of the activity.

Healey communicated that the UK’s armed forces effectively conveyed to the Russian submarines that their movements were not covert, contrary to the intentions of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Healey warned Putin against any attempts to damage UK cables and pipelines, stating such actions would not be tolerated and would bring serious consequences.

Healey remarked on Russia’s attempts to distract the UK with Middle Eastern affairs, underscoring the UK’s recognition of Russia as the primary threat to both the UK and NATO. He affirmed the UK’s commitment to remain vigilant of Putin’s actions while also protecting British interests and allies in the Middle East.
