Beijing: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed hope that the United States will adopt a realistic approach in its upcoming negotiations with Iran, following unsuccessful talks in Islamabad over the weekend. The discussions aimed at ceasing the US-Israeli offensive against Iran, which started on February 28, failed to reach an agreement.
According to Anadolu Agency, Lavrov made these remarks while addressing a press conference in Beijing during his two-day visit to China. He emphasized the need for the US to consider the interests of the entire region and avoid unprovoked aggression. Lavrov highlighted the vulnerability of Gulf countries due to the US-Israeli actions and expressed Moscow's concern for their economic and social well-being.
Talks in Islamabad were part of ongoing efforts to reach a permanent resolution, and plans for another round of discussions are underway. US President Donald Trump was optimistic about resuming direct US-Iranian negotiations, suggesting that talks could restart in Pakistan within the next two days.
Lavrov, in collaboration with China, expressed support for the continuation of negotiations, promoting realistic and fair objectives while respecting international law. He reiterated Russia's willingness to offer various forms of external support for these discussions.
The Russian foreign minister described the Middle East situation as a complex crisis, emphasizing the importance of addressing the issues in Palestine, including Gaza and the West Bank. Lavrov also discussed Russia's role in resolving Iran's nuclear program, offering to assist with the reprocessing and storage of enriched uranium.
He addressed Trump's previous threats against Iran, questioning the rationale behind such statements and highlighting the lack of respect they garner. Lavrov concluded by noting Russia's readiness to supply energy resources to countries affected by the Middle East situation, including China, promoting mutually beneficial cooperation.
