Tehran: A magnitude 5 earthquake struck western Iran early Wednesday, the Tehran University Seismological Center said. The quake hit near Gilan-e Gharb in the Kermanshah province and occurred at 12:23 a.m. local time at a depth of 9 kilometers (5.6 miles).
According to Anadolu Agency, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the seismic event. Iran is situated in a seismically active area and has experienced several significant earthquakes in recent years. The country witnessed one of its most catastrophic earthquakes in 2013 when a magnitude 6.7 earthquake devastated the city of Bam, resulting in at least 34,000 fatalities.
In July 2022, another significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the southern province of Hormozgan, along the Persian Gulf coast, leading to the deaths of at least five individuals and injuring more than 80 others.
