France Unable to Confirm Attack on Cargo Ship in Strait of Hormuz

Paris: French authorities announced they could not confirm reports that a cargo vessel operated by CMA CGM was targeted in the Strait of Hormuz. Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon commented on the situation during an interview with broadcaster franceinfo, stating, "I cannot confirm this morning whether this actually happened," in response to media reports claiming the ship had been attacked near Dubai.

According to Anadolu Agency, Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot also spoke to franceinfo, mentioning that while he couldn't confirm the reports at this stage, he anticipated clarification from the shipowner in the coming hours. Tabarot further noted that there are currently "59 vessels of French interest" still present in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier reports from American and British media suggested that a French cargo ship might have been targeted by gunfire in the vital maritime passage. This comes amid heightened regional tensions following US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and US allies in the Gulf, alongside a temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire was initiated on April 8, mediated by Pakistan, but discussions in Islamabad failed to secure a permanent resolution. The truce was extended by US President Donald Trump without a specified end date. Since April 13, the United States has implemented a naval blockade aimed at Iranian maritime activities in the strait.
