Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates announced on Sunday that its air defense systems had "successfully engaged" two drones originating from Iran, in the midst of increasing regional tensions.

According to Anadolu Agency, the UAE's Defense Ministry reported that its defense systems have intercepted a total of 551 ballistic missiles, 29 cruise missiles, and 2,265 drones since Iranian attacks commenced in February. The ministry confirmed that there were no casualties reported "in the past hours."

The escalation in regional tensions followed US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, which prompted Tehran to retaliate against Israel and US allies in the Gulf. This also led to the temporary closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire was brokered on April 8 through mediation by Pakistan, though subsequent talks in Islamabad did not result in a permanent resolution. The truce was extended by US President Donald Trump without a specific deadline, allowing for continued diplomatic efforts to reach a permanent peace agreement.
