Paris: France has expressed its condemnation over reported violence against Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, labeling the allegations as 'extremely serious' if confirmed. The French government emphasized its strong opposition to all forms of sexual violence in conflict situations, urging for scrutiny and accountability.
According to Anadolu Agency, the French Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Pascal Confavreux, highlighted France's concern following an investigative report by the New York Times. The report details instances of sexual violence against Palestinian men, women, and children in Israeli detention facilities. Confavreux stated that if these reports are verified, it would constitute extremely serious violations. He reiterated France's strong condemnation of rape and other forms of sexual violence, especially in cases related to political violence.
In addition to addressing the issue of detainees, Confavreux commented on France's stance regarding Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. He confirmed that France, in collaboration with Sweden, has proposed discussions within the European Union to consider measures that would restrict trade linked to these settlements. This initiative comes amid increasing settlement expansion in the West Bank and violence perpetrated by extremist settlers. Confavreux assured that consultations are ongoing within EU institutions and dismissed claims of the proposal being obstructed by member states.
The spokesperson also touched upon the case of Palestinian filmmaker Mohammed Alshareef, who has reportedly faced difficulties obtaining a visa to attend the Cannes Film Festival for the screening of his film, 'Super Sila'. Confavreux expressed France's attentiveness to Alshareef's situation.
Furthermore, Confavreux addressed concerns regarding Lebanon, noting that the situation remains worrisome for France despite a recently extended ceasefire. He remarked on the fragility of the ceasefire, citing violations by Hezbollah and the Israeli army as unacceptable. He urged all parties involved to adhere strictly to the ceasefire and ensure the protection of civilians.
