Ankara: The Israeli army has declared a "large-scale" offensive in the southern region of Lebanon, targeting the areas of Beaufort Ridge and Wadi al-Salouqi. The military operation, which began several days ago, involves significant ground forces, as announced by military spokeswoman Ella Waweya on the social media platform X.
According to Anadolu Agency, Waweya stated that the objective of the offensive is to dismantle "terrorist infrastructure and eliminate militants." The Israeli forces have reportedly crossed the Litani River and extended their operations against Hezbollah beyond the river's northern side. Waweya mentioned that operations are also unfolding near the city of Nabatieh, a noted Hezbollah stronghold in southern Lebanon, with Israeli forces prepared to broaden their assault if necessary.
Defense Minister Israel Katz also communicated on X that the army has successfully crossed the Litani River and captured Beaufort Ridge as part of the ongoing military campaign. This incursion marks Israel's deepest penetration into Lebanon since its withdrawal in 2000.
Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salameh has accused the Israeli army of intentionally targeting historical sites, including the Beaufort Castle. He expressed concerns over significant damage and the destruction of key cultural and archaeological sites in Bint Jbeil, Nabatieh, and other districts. Salameh conveyed to Egypt's Al-Qahera News that southern Lebanon risks losing segments of its historical and cultural heritage if these attacks persist. He also mentioned Lebanon's intention to request UNESCO to establish an investigation into the targeting of these sites and called for enhanced protection measures for 79 locations across Lebanon.
Additionally, a senior Lebanese military source revealed to Anadolu that Israeli forces have advanced into villages north of the Litani River, reaching the outskirts of Nabatieh. Despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was extended for 45 days from May 17, mediated by the US, Israeli attacks have persisted.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that since March 2, Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 3,370 people throughout Lebanon.
