Washington: In a move aimed at bolstering diplomatic relations, US President Donald Trump announced that Tom Barrack, the current US ambassador to Trkiye, will also take on the role of special presidential envoy to Syria and Iraq. This decision underscores Washington's commitment to deepening its strategic engagement with these nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump emphasized the growing relationship between the United States and the Middle Eastern countries in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He highlighted that Barrack will continue in his ambassadorial role in Trkiye while receiving full support from the United States Department of State. Trump commended Barrack's performance and expressed gratitude for his ongoing dedication to serve in these capacities.

Barrack, a close ally of Trump, has been serving as ambassador to Trkiye since his confirmation in 2025. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that Barrack would retain a significant diplomatic role in shaping policy for Syria and Iraq, even after the end of his formal mandate as special envoy to Syria. Rubio further stated that Barrack will be a central interlocutor on Syria and a key trusted figure regarding Iraq.
