Paris: Leader of the France Unbowed movement, Jean-Luc Melenchon, has urged the French government to spearhead the formation of an international coalition under the United Nations to counter Israel’s military activities in Lebanon. Melenchon called upon President Emmanuel Macron through a message on X, a US-based social media platform, to enhance France’s support for Lebanon by creating a global alliance aimed at advocating for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.

According to Anadolu Agency, Melenchon emphasized the necessity for this coalition to secure a majority within the UN to deploy troops tasked with overseeing the withdrawal of Israeli forces and enforcing an immediate ceasefire. He condemned the aggression involving Iran, designating it as illegal and pressing for its unconditional cessation. Melenchon further advocated for the resumption of nuclear negotiations grounded in the 2015 agreement, from which the US later withdrew.

Melenchon highlighted the need for consistent international law application in the region, asserting that lasting peace requires an end to double standards. Despite a ceasefire agreement effective from April 17, which was extended for 45 days after US-mediated indirect talks, Israel has persisted in its military actions in Lebanon since early March. Recently, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a more profound incursion, resulting in Israeli forces capturing the strategic Beaufort Castle.

Iran has stipulated the cessation of combat on all fronts, including Lebanon, as a condition for reaching a permanent peace agreement with the US.
