Belgrade: European Council President Antonio Costa said Thursday that the EU's enlargement to the Western Balkans is the bloc's most important geopolitical investment as he spoke in Belgrade, the capital of candidate country Serbia.

According to Anadolu Agency, Costa made these remarks during a joint news briefing with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. He emphasized that the enlargement process is not intended to blackmail Serbia or create obstacles, but to work closely with Serbian authorities throughout the journey towards EU membership.

Costa reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to Serbia's European aspirations, especially in light of current global geopolitical uncertainties and economic challenges. He stressed that enlargement is not merely an opportunity but a geostrategic necessity for Europe, emphasizing that it is an investment in the continent's peace, stability, security, and prosperity.

Costa highlighted the importance of trust in the enlargement process and expressed support for Serbia's efforts, noting that the EU is Serbia's "most significant partner in trade investment." He stated that while the EU is prepared to do more, the pace of progress largely depends on Serbia's determination. He urged swift action, as the opportunity for decisive steps is now.

Furthermore, Costa underscored the need to enhance regional cooperation and align with EU policies and values, particularly in foreign and security policy. He urged Serbia to expedite reforms in rule of law, media freedom, and the electoral framework to advance the accession process.
