Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday criticized what he termed an 'unpatriotic' vote aimed at ending US military action in Iran. The vote, which sought to limit the president's war powers, has sparked significant debate among lawmakers.

According to Anadolu Agency, the US House of Representatives approved a war powers resolution on Wednesday, intending to remove the US Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran. The resolution passed with a vote of 215-208, with four Republicans joining Democrats in what has been seen as a rare rebuke of President Trump.

In response, Trump took to his Truth Social platform, expressing his displeasure with the decision. He labeled the vote as 'meaningless' and criticized the four Republicans who sided with Democrats, calling them 'grandstanders' and expressing that they should be ashamed of their actions.

The passage of the resolution now moves the measure to the Senate for consideration. However, its future remains uncertain. Even if it passes both chambers, the ability of Congress to compel a president to withdraw forces under the 1973 War Powers Resolution is a matter of legal contention.

The US Constitution grants Congress the sole power to declare war, but Trump administration officials have been ambiguous about whether the current conflict, which is in a ceasefire with occasional hostilities, qualifies as an official war. The War Powers Resolution restricts the president from keeping US troops in active hostilities for more than 60 days without congressional approval. The Trump administration contends that the ceasefire initiated on April 8 effectively paused this 60-day requirement, a point of contention among Trump's critics.
