Iran Shuts Down Hormozgan Airports Amid Heightened Tensions: Reports

Iran: Iran has shut all airports in the southern province of Hormozgan until further notice due to security conditions, as reported by the semi-official Mehr news agency.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kazem Tavasoli, the director general of Hormozgan Airports, confirmed that all airports in the province had been closed, resulting in the cancellation of all flights. Tavasoli emphasized that any decision to reopen the airports would be communicated through official channels.

The closure announcement coincided with US President Donald Trump's statement at the NATO summit in Ankara, Trkiye, declaring that the memorandum of understanding with Iran was 'over.' This memorandum, facilitated by Pakistan and signed by both Iran and the US in June, aimed to resolve their military conflict and foster a lasting peace agreement.

Hormozgan province, strategically located along the Strait of Hormuz, has witnessed escalating tensions following reported attacks on commercial vessels and military exchanges between Iran and the US.

The situation intensified as Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a missile and drone operation targeting 85 US military sites, including Salman Port, the US Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, and Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait, as reported by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

In response, the US military conducted a series of strikes against Iran, targeting more than 80 sites. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that these strikes were carried out 'in immediate response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.'
