Ankara: US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Iran's top military commanders have been killed and claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his successor, was "90% gone."
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump made these remarks during an interview with Fox News, where he asserted that Iran's military capabilities had been severely degraded. He stated, "They have no navy. They have no air force. It's all gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone. Their leaders have all been killed."
Trump further emphasized the extent of the US military's impact on Iran by saying, "Their best leaders have been killed. They're gone. Khomeini is gone," referring to the late Iranian revolutionary leader who passed away in 1989. He appeared to mistakenly mention Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed during US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. Trump's remarks also included that Mojtaba Khamenei is recovering from injuries sustained in the airstrike and was absent from his father's funeral ceremonies held recently in Iran and Iraq.
The statements were made amid renewed exchanges of strikes between the US and Iran over the weekend. Trump announced that the US was "reinstating" a blockade on Iran and that it would impose charges on ships for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
