Oman Maintains Neutral Stance in Strait of Hormuz Amid US-Iran Tensions

Ankara: Oman announced its ongoing commitment to "transparent and neutral cooperation" with all involved parties to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to rise over the strategic waterway.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Omani Foreign Ministry issued a statement emphasizing the nation's dedication to international law and its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The statement urged all parties to respect and adhere to these international regulations.

Recent days have seen a spike in tensions between the US and Iran concerning the Strait of Hormuz, despite a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding intended to resolve conflicts and establish a peace agreement. US President Donald Trump indicated that the US would potentially take control of operations in the strait and expected financial contributions from other countries for protecting the waterway. In response, Iran's military declared it would not permit US interference in managing the strait.

In a related development, Oman expressed condemnation of Houthi missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and voiced support for Riyadh's initiatives to protect its sovereignty and stability. This came after Saudi air defenses intercepted ballistic missiles from the Houthis in Yemen. Additionally, Yemen's Defense Ministry reported striking the Sanaa airport runway following the Houthi group's actions that prevented Yemeni flights and allowed an Iranian aircraft to land, allegedly breaching Yemeni territory.
