Turkish Defense Minister Emphasizes Importance of Preserving Spirit of 2016 Coup Defeat for Future Generations

Ankara: Turkish National Defense Minister Yasar Guler on Tuesday emphasized the importance of not only commemorating the defeated 2016 coup attempt but also preserving its spirit to inspire future generations. Speaking at a ceremony at the ministry headquarters in Ankara to mark Democracy and National Unity Day, Guler reflected on how the coup bid, which targeted Trkiye's democratic order, national will, and independence, was thwarted through the unity of the nation and security forces under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's leadership.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guler stated, "Our real duty is to keep alive the spirit entrusted to us that night and pass it on intact to future generations." He elaborated on the "terror-free Trkiye" initiative, describing it as a national vision that extends beyond security policy, aiming to strengthen unity, end terrorism, and ensure lasting peace and prosperity.

Guler highlighted the multifaceted threats states face today, including terrorism, cyberattacks, disinformation, economic pressure, and attempts to fuel social division. He stressed that national unity remains Trkiye's strongest safeguard against these conventional and hybrid threats.

The defense minister also noted the enhanced strength and operational capability of the Turkish Armed Forces following the removal of Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) members. He added that the recent NATO summit hosted by Trkiye on July 7-8 showcased the country's growing international influence, with allied leaders praising both the Turkish military and its defense industry.
