Ankara: US President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday that no nation should be permitted to impose transit fees for the passage through the Strait of Hormuz. During a meeting at the White House with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, Trump expressed his belief that investments should be prioritized over fees.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump highlighted a shift in approach from Gulf countries, which have shown a willingness to channel significant investments into the United States rather than depending on transit fees. He described this development as very satisfactory and preferable to the imposition of fees.

The president confirmed discussions with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait, noting their enthusiasm for investing substantial amounts in the US. Trump dismissed the concept of charging fees, emphasizing that such investments would be more beneficial.

Trump also addressed the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that the United States should not shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding this crucial maritime passage without obtaining corresponding economic advantages. He criticized the current situation as unfair to the US.

When questioned about his previous decisions, such as ending a naval blockade or granting sanctions waivers, Trump stated that he aimed to foster diplomatic opportunities. However, he placed the blame on Iran for escalating tensions, citing their aggressive actions as a significant mistake.
