Nairobi: At least 114 civilians were killed and 17 abducted by rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in June, as detailed in a report by the Kivu Security Tracker released on Saturday. The report highlights the ongoing violence and instability in the regions of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, which recorded a total of 247 security incidents during the month.

According to Anadolu Agency, the M23 rebel group has been identified as the primary perpetrator of violence against civilians in eastern Congo. The group's offensives in Masisi and Rutshuru territories in North Kivu have been particularly noted for targeting civilians suspected of supporting the pro-government militia, Wazalendo. In one of the most serious incidents reported, at least 48 bodies were found in Bibwe, Masisi territory, following M23 operations.

The report also documented 115 armed clashes in June, with nearly 40% involving the M23. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) remain a significant threat to the civilian population, responsible for 62 deaths and 57 kidnappings during the same period.

Congo continues to face one of the world's most prolonged and complex conflicts, leading to severe humanitarian crises, with 7 million people displaced, as reported by the UN.
