Accra: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that the recently signed memorandum of understanding with the United States will serve as the 'cornerstone' of Iran's future foreign relations. This declaration was made public on the social media platform X, highlighting the strategic importance of the agreement for Tehran.

According to Anadolu Agency, Pezeshkian emphasized that the memorandum was the product of the collective wisdom of the Supreme National Security Council members, all of whom stand unified in support of the agreement. He expressed confidence that the memorandum will enhance the security of Iran, the region, and its allies. Pezeshkian also underscored the importance of ensuring that the terms of the memorandum are respected by all parties involved.

The memorandum emerged after a US-Iran ceasefire agreement in April, followed by a Pakistan-mediated signing in June aimed at resolving the ongoing military conflict and establishing a sustainable peace. However, tensions reignited last month when the US initiated 13 days of bombardment on Iran, attributing attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz to Tehran. In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes on Gulf nations hosting US assets.

US President Donald Trump commented on the situation, revealing that he had called off a planned military strike against Iran. This decision followed requests from Tehran and other Middle Eastern countries for additional time to finalize a peace deal framework, which notably includes Israel's participation. Trump, via his social media platform Truth Social, stated that the parties have agreed on the 'perimeters' of a potential deal, which aims for the immediate and complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of Iran's nuclear activities.
