Russia to Build Small Nuclear Power Plant in Myanmar as ‘Symbol of Friendship’

Moscow: Russia is set to embark on constructing a small nuclear power plant in Myanmar, a venture that Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin declared as a 'new symbol of Russian-Myanmar friendship'. The announcement was made during Mishustin's meeting with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Moscow.

According to Anadolu Agency, the project arises from an intergovernmental agreement signed in March 2025, focusing on the construction of a small-scale nuclear power plant utilizing Russian technology. Initially, the plant is planned to have a capacity of 110 megawatts, with potential for future expansion. Mishustin emphasized that this initiative could broaden bilateral cooperation, extending into fundamental and applied scientific research.

Mishustin highlighted that the nuclear project is expected to drive cooperation between Russia and Myanmar beyond the energy domain, fostering deeper ties and collaboration across various sectors.
