Openai: OpenAI on Tuesday introduced a version of ChatGPT designed for teenagers, adding stricter restrictions on sensitive content and giving parents more control over how their children use the artificial intelligence chatbot.
According to Anadolu Agency, the new version, dubbed ChatGPT for Teens, is automatically activated for users who are identified as being between the ages of 13 and 17. The company stated that this version comes with enhanced restrictions on content related to self-harm, suicide, violence, eating disorders, and sexual material.
OpenAI emphasized that the system is designed to prevent the development of emotional dependence on the chatbot and to avoid presenting the AI as a substitute for human relationships. Parents who connect their accounts with their children's accounts will have the ability to manage specific settings, such as memory and chat history, and can establish timeframes during which ChatGPT cannot be accessed. While parents are generally unable to view their teenagers' conversations, they may receive alerts in rare situations that indicate a serious risk of self-harm.
The teen-focused version also incorporates educational features, including a Study Mode that assists students in solving problems rather than merely providing answers, along with quizzes and other learning tools. This initiative responds to the growing use of generative AI among young people, amid concerns from researchers, parents, and policymakers about children's exposure to inappropriate content, reliance on chatbots for emotional support, and the impact of AI on education.
Furthermore, OpenAI has been under legal scrutiny due to teenagers' use of ChatGPT, with lawsuits filed by families claiming the chatbot contributed to their children's suicides. This has increased pressure on the company to enhance protections for minors.
