Beijing: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced on Wednesday that China is committed to working with Chile's new government to enhance practical cooperation and elevate bilateral relations to a new level, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
According to Anadolu Agency, China aims to collaborate with Chile under the 'China Year' of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), while advancing efforts to build an Asia-Pacific community and promote the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific. Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Perez Mackenna, before embarking on a diplomatic tour including China, Vietnam, and Japan, emphasized the significance of the visit for Chile's foreign relations.
The Beijing discussions centered on trade, investment, and bilateral cooperation, with additional focus on science and technology, artificial intelligence, and talent development, as reported by Chinese state media. Wang Yi expressed China's readiness to strengthen mutual trust with Chile and expand cooperation in areas of shared interest, while enhancing connectivity between the two countries' industrial and supply chains.
Wang also highlighted that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Chile, according to Xinhua. He remarked that Chile has consistently been a leader among Latin American and Caribbean countries in fostering relations with China, regardless of political party differences.
Chile holds the distinction of being the first South American nation to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China and the first Latin American country to sign a free trade agreement with China. The two nations have maintained robust economic and trade relationships, with China emerging as Chile's largest trading partner. Chile is a major supplier of copper and agricultural products to the Chinese market.
