Tunisia Recovers Bodies of Four Migrants After Boat Capsizes Off Coast

Tunis: Tunisian authorities recovered the bodies of four irregular migrants from Tunisia off the coast of Ben Guerdane in the country's southeast after a boat carrying 15 people capsized, a rights group said Saturday. Mostafa Abdelkebir, the head of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, reported the incident.

According to Anadolu Agency, Abdelkebir stated that 15 migrants had embarked on their journey on Wednesday from the coasts of Ben Guerdane and Zarzis in the southeastern town of Medenine. Their goal was to reach Italy, but the boat tragically capsized during the attempt. Security forces succeeded in rescuing one of the missing migrants on Friday, and search operations for the remaining individuals are ongoing.

Tunisia has become a significant departure point for irregular migrants aiming to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. Despite this, migration attempts have significantly decreased over the last two years as Tunisian authorities have increased efforts to crack down on migration and enhanced maritime border controls.
