South kordofan: Flash floods have displaced 63 families and damaged 130 homes in South Kordofan and North Darfur in southern and western Sudan, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the organization reported that heavy rains and flash floods ravaged the village of Al-Atafa in the Al-Tadamon locality of South Kordofan. This disaster displaced 49 families, destroyed 49 homes, and partially damaged 38 others. The displaced families have sought refuge in temporary shelters located in open areas within the same locality.

The IOM further reported that rains and floods also displaced 14 families in the Kabkabiya locality of North Darfur state on Thursday. In this area, 14 homes were destroyed and 29 shelters were partially damaged.

There was no immediate comment from the Sudanese authorities on the report. Sudan experiences heavy rainfall during its rainy season, which runs from June to October, often resulting in widespread annual flooding.

These natural disasters come as Sudan has been gripped by a war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and displacing around 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
