Jerusalem: The Israeli army launched artillery shells into southern Syria on Saturday, targeting Bat al-Warda Hill near Beit Jinn. This military action took place despite recent diplomatic talks aimed at reducing hostilities between the two nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, the attack occurred shortly after a Syrian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, engaged in discussions with an Israeli delegation in Jordan, facilitated by the United States. The objective of the meeting was to de-escalate tensions following an Israeli strike on a Syrian airbase.

Citing a diplomatic source, SANA news agency reported that the meeting was part of broader efforts to minimize conflict. The discussions are seen as a step toward reaching a security agreement that could eventually lead to a comprehensive peace, though Syria maintains its claim to the occupied Golan Heights.

The Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967, remains a contentious issue in Syrian-Israeli relations. In the aftermath of the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in 2024, Israel has increased its military operations in Syria, targeting sites it associates with Iranian-backed forces. Recent Israeli military actions have included attacks on weapon depots and strategic military positions, such as the bombing of the Abu Duhur airbase in northwestern Idlib.
