Rome: US Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta stated that President Donald Trump holds no personal grievances against Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, instead expressing frustrations related to NATO, as reported by The Washington Post on Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Fertitta explained that Trump's criticisms were not directed at Meloni personally but were emblematic of broader dissatisfaction with NATO's operations. Despite traditionally strong ties between Meloni and Trump, tensions have arisen due to Trump's discontent with Europe's contributions to NATO and their support for the conflict in Iran.

The diplomatic strain intensified following Trump's disparaging remarks about Pope Leo XIV and his claim that Meloni had 'begged' for a photograph during the G7 summit in France. Fertitta noted that the relationship had been amicable until differences emerged over Italy's stance on the Iranian conflict, suggesting that such disputes were being blown out of proportion.

Fertitta advised the Italian government against engaging in prolonged public disputes with Trump, emphasizing his relentless nature in confrontations. He remarked that global politicians must grasp the nuances of handling Trump's distinctive approach, suggesting that being challenged by Trump is indicative of being on his radar.
