Tripoli: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his approval on Monday for a draft final agreement signed in Libya, designed to help resolve the country's political stalemate and chart a course toward national elections. 'The agreement marks an important step in advancing Libya towards national elections and ending the transitional period,' UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric informed reporters.

According to Anadolu Agency, the deal tackles the first two milestones of the UN political roadmap. These milestones include the restructuring of the High National Election Commission, responsible for overseeing the voting process, and resolving contentious legal disputes concerning presidential and parliamentary elections.

The agreement was finalized by the 4+4 Small Dialogue Committee, which comprises representatives from the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity and the eastern Libyan authorities, on Sunday. The signing ceremony took place at the UN Support Mission in Libya headquarters in the capital and was attended by international ambassadors and members of Libya's legislative chambers.

Since April 2026, the committee has been engaged in UN-sponsored negotiations with the goal of breaking the political deadlock and unifying the country's executive power. As part of the restructuring, Dhaou Ibrahim Attia has been appointed as the chairman of the election commission's board, with Sana al-Lishani named as his deputy.

Guterres urged all relevant national actors and institutions to implement the agreement in 'good faith,' as conveyed by Dujarric. The breakthrough underscores that significant progress can still be achieved through diplomatic dialogue.
