Bishkek: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to prioritize universal security and resist unilateralism and protectionism. Speaking at a summit in Bishkek, Xi emphasized the need for the SCO to uphold dialogue and improve governance.

According to Anadolu Agency, Xi's remarks come amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, tensions between the US and Iran, and the crisis in Gaza. The two-day summit, marking the SCO's 25th anniversary, is attended by leaders from Russia, Iran, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and India.

Xi highlighted China's commitment to using the SCO as a platform for implementing global initiatives like the Belt and Road and Global Development Initiatives. He also announced plans to establish a China-SCO basic education cooperation center to strengthen ties within the organization.

Addressing the "SCO Plus" meeting, Xi criticized hegemony and unilateralism as out of step with historical trends. He urged the SCO to embrace multipolarity and sovereign equality, emphasizing the importance of balance, order, and rule of law in achieving a multipolar world.

Xi concluded by advocating for major countries to lead in upholding global rules and addressing challenges. He warned against protectionism and decoupling, insisting that true multilateralism requires cooperation and inclusive governance.
