Bishkek: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday called for improving the effectiveness of the UN and adapting the organization to 'changing realities.' Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's (SCO) expanded summit in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek, Putin said that although not everything about the UN's work 'pleases or satisfies' everyone, the organization should, 'without a doubt,' continue to play a central role in global affairs.

According to Anadolu Agency, Putin emphasized that the UN's potential is currently underutilized, and it is crucial to enhance its effectiveness. He suggested expanding the representation of its bodies, including the Security Council, by incorporating countries from the Global South and East. This adaptation is necessary to align with the fundamental changes emerging in global politics and economics.

Putin argued that the formation of a 'new, truly just' multipolar world order is 'irreversible,' highlighting the UN's unifying and constructive role in this context. He asserted that the UN must maintain its primary function as the mechanism for 'reconciling interests,' with the UN Charter remaining the key source of international law.

He noted that alongside the United Nations, new multilateral regional structures have emerged in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, integrating into the architecture of a multipolar world. He identified the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as one such structure, playing a significant role in this transformation.

Furthermore, Putin expressed optimism that the 'SCO Plus' meeting would help strengthen friendly ties between all represented countries and intensify cooperation across various areas. The Russian president's visit to Bishkek coincides with the SCO's 25th anniversary, where he also participated in the SCO Council of Heads of State meeting, addressing the organization's leaders.
