Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated on Tuesday that any attempts to create divisions among allies would not succeed, expressing solidarity with Germany in the wake of an alleged Russian hybrid attack at Leipzig Airport. "Attempts to intimidate us or to drive a wedge between Allies will not succeed: hybrid actions against any one of us are a matter of concern for all of us, and will be met with a united response," Meloni communicated on US social media platform X.

According to Anadolu Agency, Meloni emphasized Italy's complete support for Germany, stressing that the security of one ally is inherently linked to the security of all. She underscored the importance of steadfastness and collaboration, urging allies to maintain a credible posture of deterrence to safeguard citizens' security.

Germany, on the same day, accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport the previous month and announced significant countermeasures and sanctions against Moscow. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, during a press conference in Berlin, revealed that investigators attributed the plot to Russian intelligence services, executed by lower-level operatives.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during the briefing, confirmed that Russia's ambassador had been summoned to receive Berlin's protest and details of Germany's response. He announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn on September 18 and the termination of the agreement concerning the Russian House in Berlin, a Soviet-era cultural center suspected by Western officials of being a potential cover for intelligence activities.
