Ankara: Trkiye's aspiration to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) does not signify a shift away from Western alliances, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated. Speaking to reporters aboard the presidential plane after attending the SCO Heads of State Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Erdogan emphasized Ankara's commitment to a comprehensive foreign policy strategy.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan articulated Trkiye's aim to bolster its geopolitical influence with a "360-degree vision." The president highlighted that the Bishkek summit underscored Trkiye's efforts to diversify its economic, political, and strategic partnerships. He noted that Trkiye has bolstered its relations with SCO member states, spanning regions from China and Central Asia to Russia and South Asia, as part of a multifaceted foreign policy approach.
Erdogan also addressed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, expressing a mutual desire with Russian President Vladimir Putin for a swift resolution. He described his discussions with Putin as productive, emphasizing the need for a peace process and highlighting the importance of safeguarding civilian maritime transport in the Black Sea.
In defense matters, Erdogan mentioned Trkiye's ongoing dialogue about rejoining the F-35 fighter jet program, while simultaneously advancing its indigenous defense capabilities with projects like the KAAN fighter jet. He stressed the importance of developing Trkiye's own defense systems to enhance strategic options.
Erdogan also introduced the Mecca Defense Alliance, a tripartite initiative with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan aimed at enhancing regional stability and security. He detailed the outcomes of the alliance's first committee meeting in Istanbul, which focused on military cooperation and defense industry collaboration.
Regarding Greek-Turkish relations, Erdogan urged Greece to cease arming demilitarized islands and adhere to international agreements. He reiterated Trkiye's commitment to peaceful and stable regional relations, warning against any misinterpretation of Trkiye's diplomatic approach as weakness.
On the "Terror-Free Trkiye" initiative, Erdogan underscored the importance of achieving national unity and dismantling the PKK's influence. He emphasized the need for a collective national identity and commitment to the Great Trkiye Consensus.
Erdogan concluded by addressing the situation in Syria, advocating for the country's unity and development. He welcomed the dissolution of the SDF and expressed optimism about the integration process under Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. Erdogan reiterated Trkiye's consistent stance on Syria's territorial integrity and called for international support in the country's reconstruction efforts.
