Tehran: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated on Sunday that the United States' economic and maritime blockade against Tehran could result in significant financial losses for Washington, potentially exceeding the impact on Iran. "If the US wants to inflict one dollar of economic damage on Iran, it may face several dollars in costs and losses itself," IRGC spokesman Brig. Gen. Hossein Mohibi told Iran's Mehr News Agency. He emphasized that Iran would not capitulate under sanctions and pressure.
According to Anadolu Agency, Mohibi asserted that US President Donald Trump had anticipated that reliance on military power, including naval fleets and aircraft carriers, would compel Iran to yield. However, Mohibi argued that recent events have proven those expectations incorrect. He noted that the US, already burdened with substantial debt and economic rivalry from China and other nations, would find it challenging to succeed in this economic confrontation with Iran.
Mohibi also highlighted that regional developments have strained US strategic reserves and disrupted access to critical raw materials. He pointed to disturbances in aluminum production and exports in the region as examples. These developments, he said, demonstrate that economic pressure and blockades do not guarantee success and can impose significant costs on the enforcing nation.
The conflict, which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, has escalated with Iranian retaliatory attacks on US and Israeli targets, further straining maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. In parallel with military actions, Washington has intensified economic pressure on Tehran, imposing sanctions affecting Iran's oil, shipping, aviation, technology, and financial sectors. Iranian officials have characterized these sanctions and maritime trade restrictions as an economic war and blockade.
