Russia: Russia on Tuesday threatened retaliation after Hungary expelled 10 Russian diplomats, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. "The response to the Russophobic lobby in Budapest will be harsh and painful," ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told state-run news agency Tass.

According to Anadolu Agency, earlier on Monday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban announced that Budapest expelled the diplomats over activities deemed incompatible with their diplomatic status, emphasizing that the move was aimed at protecting Hungary's security and sovereignty. Orban clarified that the decision did not signify a severance of diplomatic ties with Moscow, and Hungary would continue to engage in dialogue with Russia.

The expulsion follows the earlier removal of a Russian diplomat in May due to alleged intelligence-gathering activities. Additionally, in May, Orban summoned Russian Ambassador Evgeny Stanislavov after Russian drone strikes targeted Ukraine's western Zakarpattia region, an area with a significant ethnic Hungarian population.
