Washington: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized the Supreme Court after it declined to allow the US Postal Service to enforce a rule imposing tighter restrictions on mail-in ballots ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump expressed his discontent on his Truth Social platform, accusing the Supreme Court of being influenced by the "Radical Left" and suggesting that their decisions have regressed America by at least a century. The decision, issued on Monday, saw Justices Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and Brett Kavanaugh-appointed by Trump during his first term-vote against the rule change.

Trump voiced his disappointment, stating, "These are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court, they are merely a shell of their original selves." He acknowledged the difficulty of criticizing the Supreme Court but felt compelled to do so out of obligation and duty, despite potential long-term repercussions.

The Supreme Court's decision prevents the new postal service rules governing federal election ballot mail from taking effect before the midterm elections, set for November 3. The court remarked that "The Government is unlikely to succeed on the merits of its challenge to the District Court's preliminary injunction."

Opponents of the proposed rules argued that implementing such changes at this late stage would be nearly impossible and could result in chaos and confusion, as many states have already distributed mail-in ballots to voters who requested them. Meanwhile, the Trump administration maintained that the rules were necessary to combat voter fraud.

The ruling keeps the new mail-in ballot requirements suspended while the underlying legal challenge continues. Earlier this year, Trump intensified his efforts to reshape election rules by signing an executive order aimed at establishing state voter eligibility lists and directing the postal service to limit mail-in ballots to verified voters.

While Trump is not on the ballot for the midterms, the predicted gains for Democrats in Congress could significantly impact his ability to govern effectively for the remainder of his term.
