Jordan’s King Urges Regional De-Escalation in Call with US Secretary of State

Amman:Jordan's King Abdullah II emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive regional de-escalation agreement during a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussion centered on reducing regional tensions and enhancing the strategic partnership between Jordan and the United States across various sectors, as stated by Jordan's Royal Hashemite Court.

According to Anadolu Agency, King Abdullah highlighted the importance of a de-escalation agreement to ensure the security and sovereignty of Arab nations. He acknowledged the significant role of the United States in supporting efforts to achieve stability in the region.

The conversation took place amid increased tensions between Washington and Tehran, following US military actions in Iran and Iranian responses targeting US military facilities and equipment in Arab states. Although a memorandum of understanding was signed between the two sides in mid-June, subsequent negotiations have stalled.

King Abdullah also expressed concerns over Israeli escalation in southern Syria and reaffirmed Jordan's commitment to supporting Syria's endeavors to strengthen its security, stability, and sovereignty. Additionally, he referenced the outcomes of the latest Aqaba Process meetings held in France on September 17, which aimed at rallying international support for the Lebanese army in maintaining national security and stability.

The Aqaba Process, initiated by King Abdullah in 2015, seeks to enhance coordination, cooperation, and expertise sharing among regional and international partners to combat terrorism and extremism.
