Russia-Ukraine Tensions Escalate with Overnight Strikes

Kyiv:Overnight strikes between Russia and Ukraine resulted in at least one person killed and five others injured, reported officials from both nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, a Russian drone hit a residential high-rise building in Kyiv, leading to the death of one individual. Additionally, Russian forces targeted the Pivdennyi Bridge in Kyiv, causing its closure to traffic, as stated by the city's Mayor Vitali Klitschko on Telegram. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that Russia also attacked a kindergarten in Kherson, a grocery store in Kharkiv, and damaged an institute and critical infrastructure. Other cities, including Kramatorsk and Sumy, as well as regions like Dnipro, Odesa, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Rivne, were also under attack. Four people were reported injured in the Russian overnight assault.

Zelenskyy accused Moscow of continuing to use foreign parts for its weapons, despite attempts to localize production. He emphasized that supply chains from Europe, the United States, China, Japan, and other countries were still supplying components to Russia. He urged for stronger sanctions, asserting that political will is necessary to stop Russian drone production.

Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed ongoing strikes on Ukrainian port and energy infrastructure, along with maritime vessels reportedly used by Ukraine's armed forces. Targets included a bridge in Kyiv, an electrical substation near Nalyvaikivka, and an industrial complex at Odesa's port. The ministry also claimed a cargo ship in the Black Sea was struck for transporting military equipment to Odesa.

Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russia launched 108 attack drones overnight, with 88 being shot down or suppressed.

In response, Ukrainian drones targeted industrial infrastructure in Russia's Volgograd region, causing a fire at an apartment building and injuring one person, according to regional Gov. Andrey Bocharov. Zelenskyy confirmed attacks on Volgograd and the Samara region, highlighting strikes on oil facilities and successful operations in various Russian regions, including Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, and Krasnodar.

Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak noted that Ukrainian attacks targeted four oil refineries, but processing equipment was undamaged. An assessment of damage is ongoing at one plant.

Russia's Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted or destroyed 646 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions, including Crimea, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov. Due to the ongoing conflict, independent verification of these claims remains challenging.
