Copenhagen:Cristiano Ronaldo will always be the "greatest symbol" of Portugal's national team and country, according to Bruno Fernandes, who called for unity amid uncertainty over Ronaldo's international future. Despite the controversy surrounding Ronaldo's recent departure from the squad, Fernandes emphasized his respect and admiration for the 41-year-old captain.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fernandes, who has previously played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United, urged the national team to maintain unity and resolve any disputes internally. He stated that Ronaldo's achievements have secured him a place among the best of all time and in the hearts of the Portuguese people.
Fernandes also dismissed any notions of division within the squad, advocating for harmony and asking the country to remain united. He expressed confidence that the issues would be resolved amicably and praised Ronaldo as an enduring icon of world football.
Ronaldo, Portugal's all-time leading scorer with 146 goals and most-capped player with 234 appearances, announced his departure from the national team's training camp in Copenhagen last Wednesday. This decision came after head coach Jorge Jesus indicated that Ronaldo would not start in the match against Denmark. Ronaldo, who had been an unused substitute in the previous game against Norway, stated he would explain his reasons for leaving at a later date.
Despite Ronaldo's absence, Portugal secured a 4-2 victory over Denmark, continuing their strong performance in the Nations League Group A4. Jesus redirected focus to the upcoming match against Norway, reinforcing Ronaldo's significance to Portuguese football but emphasizing the importance of the national team's objectives.
Portugal is set to face Norway at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto on Sunday.
