Spanish Trade Unions Plan General Strike Over Housing and Wages

Madrid:Spanish trade unions CCOO and UGT have announced their intention to organize a 24-hour general strike this fall, aiming to address issues related to wages and access to housing.

According to Anadolu Agency, the unions stated that the strike is contingent upon approval from their highest governing bodies. This announcement comes in the wake of the Congress of Deputies' recent rejection of royal decree-laws concerning housing.

The unions plan to collaborate with tenant movements and neighborhood groups, tying their labor demands to ongoing housing protests. A strike date is to be coordinated with these groups and the Tenants' Union. The unions emphasized the importance of collective action, referencing recent demonstrations as a testament to the strength of public demand.

The proposed strike is connected to the unions' proposals for the sixth Agreement for Employment and Collective Bargaining, which advocate for wage increases between 4% and 7%, along with wage review clauses. Additionally, the unions' housing demands include a comprehensive social pact, rental price limits, a permanent stock of publicly protected housing, and the nationwide enforcement of Spain's housing rights law.

CCOO and UGT have urged employers' organizations to unblock collective bargaining processes and ensure that wages meet basic living needs. They also called on public authorities to effectively enforce housing rights regulations.
