UN Welcomes Release of Detained Staff Member Held by Houthis

Ankara:The United Nations has expressed relief over the release of a staff member who was detained by the Houthi group in Yemen. The UN continues to urge for the immediate release of dozens of other humanitarian personnel still in custody.

According to Anadolu Agency, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq reiterated that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is committed to securing the release of all detained UN and humanitarian personnel through all possible means.

The World Food Program (WFP) confirmed that the released individual was part of its agency. They expressed relief that the worker has safely reunited with his family after what they described as arbitrary detention.

The WFP, along with the UN Secretary-General, stands in solidarity with the 72 UN personnel and five former UN personnel, including WFP colleagues, who remain detained in Yemen. The agency voiced its support for constructive dialogue with the Houthis to facilitate further releases and agreements.
