French Schools to Suspend Classes Amid Student Protests

Paris:French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced that high school classes will be suspended toward the end of the week to allow for 'a time for internal democracy' in response to student mobilizations and violence.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lecornu emphasized the importance of standing against violence and urged politicians to support public servants affected by the unrest. He stated that democracy requires individual responsibility and condemned acts such as arson and violence against teachers.

The protests, initiated in late September by students, highlight concerns over staff shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and inadequate facilities. These demonstrations, which have spread across cities in France, have been mostly peaceful but have included violent incidents such as fires and attacks on school staff and police.

Lecornu also addressed the issue of student injuries during clashes with security forces, acknowledging the possibility of accidents and stressing the need for thorough investigations and accountability. He criticized the use of the term 'police violence' and called for empathy while dealing with such incidents.

He expressed grave concern about the severity of the situation, describing it as the most significant challenge faced by the national education system in decades, and denounced the 'normalization of violence' in schools. Lecornu asserted that justice must take its course in addressing these issues.
