Iraqi Prime Minister Announces Progress in Disarmament of Armed Groups

Baghdad:Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced that three of the five armed groups that agreed to surrender their weapons have already done so, with discussions ongoing with the remaining factions.

According to Anadolu Agency, al-Zaidi made this statement during a meeting with tribal leaders and dignitaries. He emphasized that the government is committed to reinforcing state authority and preventing any group from undermining it.

Al-Zaidi highlighted the government's responsibility to protect Iraqi lives, ensuring that safeguarding citizens and strengthening state institutions are top priorities. He also stressed the importance of keeping Iraq's decision-making under national control and commended tribal leaders for their efforts in maintaining stability during challenging times.

This announcement aligns with Baghdad's ongoing efforts to consolidate control over weapons following the conclusion of the US-led international coalition's military mission in Iraq in late September. Al-Zaidi also noted the government's focus on protecting Iraq from regional conflicts and emphasized that national unity and independent decision-making are vital for the country's stability.
