Funafuti:Tuvalu has called upon world leaders to recognize the climate solutions that Pacific communities are already implementing, as officials meet for preparatory talks leading up to the COP31 climate summit.
According to Anadolu Agency, Tuvalu's Climate Change and Environment Minister, Maina Vakafua Talia, emphasized that the Pre-COP31 Leaders' event in Funafuti offers decision-makers the chance to see the vulnerabilities of the low-lying island nation firsthand. Talia stated that Tuvalu's fate will be shaped by major polluters and expressed hope that visiting leaders would seek solutions to help preserve the nation.
Leaders from the Pacific region and beyond have been visiting Tuvalu as part of the Fiji-Tuvalu-Australia Pre-COP31 program. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, attending the talks, highlighted that climate change is a daily reality for the Pacific, rather than a distant threat. He noted the high stakes in Tuvalu and affirmed Australia's commitment to working with Pacific neighbors on local solutions to global challenges, focusing on clean energy and attracting international attention to the region.
Pacific leaders convened in Fiji earlier for preparatory discussions, where Fiji urged emphasis on oceans and the blue economy within climate talks. Fiji also called for accelerated climate financing for vulnerable communities and stronger actions on renewable energy, sustainable fisheries, and ocean conservation.
The COP31 conference is scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey, from November 9-20.
