Paris:French AI company Mistral has introduced a new flagship model, Mistral Large 4, also known as Le Chonk, which it claims rivals the strongest Chinese open-weight models.

According to Anadolu Agency, Mistral Large 4 is the company's most advanced model, excelling in areas such as coding, cybersecurity, finance, legal tasks, and image understanding. The model features approximately 1 trillion parameters, with 49 billion active during processing, and a context window of 1 million tokens for handling large data volumes in a single request.

Developers can access a public preview of the model through Mistral Studio, with plans for a full public release by the end of October. The company is currently testing the system with cybersecurity experts, vetted partners, and government authorities.

Open-weight models like Mistral's allow organizations to deploy and customize AI on their infrastructure, offering greater control over data and access. The model was trained using 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell graphics processors in Mistral's European data centers, utilizing training data in over 160 languages, including all official EU languages.

In September, Mistral raised £3 billion ($3.37 billion) in a Series D funding round led by Samsung Electronics, which valued the company at over £21 billion.
