UN Rapporteur Albanese: ‘Genocide is Not Over’ in Gaza

Ankara:Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territory, asserts that the destruction in Gaza continues despite a ceasefire, describing the situation as catastrophic. She emphasizes that Palestinians are still at risk, challenging the notion that they are simply survivors of genocide.

According to Anadolu Agency, Albanese, an Italian human rights lawyer, raises concerns about the international response and the policies of governments supporting Israel, as the war enters its fourth year with significant casualties reported.

Despite an October 2025 ceasefire, Israeli attacks persist. Albanese warns that describing Palestinians as genocide survivors could imply the danger has passed, whereas the reality on the ground remains dire with much of Gaza under military control.

She draws historical parallels with past genocides and frames the situation as a struggle between forces wanting to continue or stop the exploitation of Palestine. Albanese criticizes the role of the US, Israel, and their allies in this context.

Recent electoral gains by politicians critical of Israel indicate a shift in public perception influenced by the ongoing conflict. Albanese challenges Israeli leaders' narratives, arguing they lack credibility.

Albanese acknowledges efforts by 12 countries to restrict trade with Israeli settlements but questions the scope of these measures, particularly the absence of explicit reference to East Jerusalem.

She criticizes Europe's dependence on the US, calling for a reevaluation of Middle Eastern countries' relationships with Washington and its ambitions for a 'Greater Israel,' which she argues are already in motion.

Sanctions imposed on Albanese by the US have severely impacted her personal and professional life. She is unable to conduct financial transactions or receive payments, relying on family support to manage expenses as her UN role remains unpaid.
